Book Review – Merry Gentry Series

Standard

There are a few things that I love in life.. friends, family, bdsm, cooking and reading just to name a few. So it got me thinking, I write about cooking.. why not write about the books that I read? One of the things I feel in love with in my house is the floor to ceiling bookshelves that are in my library (yes I have a small library). The shelves are near bursting with all of the books that I have read over the years.

What I am going to try an do is write about the series and not give away too many details. I do not like reading spoilers for movies or the books that I read.

The author of this series is Laurell K. Hamilton who I stumbled upon from the Anita Blake series (that will be another post). I found the series to start off well, with good plots. As the series moved on it seemed that the book was just one sex scene to another. Which I am not against, as long as it has it’s place.

I did enjoy the character development that happened over the course of the series (which I just found out is not done). The guards grew and evolved as they experienced new things and you really could see the struggle that Merry faced with her emotions.

One thing that I did not care for was how the author would repeat herself. The series is about fey and all of their different realms. Which I found interesting because each realm has their own society and different character features. Throughout the books (and repeated in the same book) the author would constantly repeat certain factoids. I’m not sure about other people, but when I am reading a book I remember what is in it and I don’t like the same phrases to be repeated constantly to hone in on a races characteristics.

All in all, I enjoyed the series. It was an easy read, and once I had time and purchased all of the books I needed I was able to read right through them. If you don’t mind books that are full of sex scenes (some on the risque side) and have a sci-fi/fantasy over tones then I hope you would enjoy these books.
